BUSINESS UNIT: Generation

ORGANIZATION: Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either title in the Technician family:

Technician Principal (grade 7) = associate's degree + six (6) years of experience; OR, HS diploma/GED equivalent + eight (8) years of experience

Technician Sr. (grade 6) = associate's degree + four (4) years of experience; OR, HS diploma/GED equivalent + six (6) years of experience

Work Designation -- this position is designated as hybrid and requires reporting to designated location on Tuesday to Thursday, with the option to work remotely Monday and Friday.

Responsible for:

  • Perform high level design work with minimal supervision in support of complex to large scope projects efficiently, effectively while meeting key dates. Work collaboratively with Principal designers, Engineers, and leadership to drive continuous improvement. Provide proficient level work activities to include computer aided drafting to prepare drawing packages, engineering drawings, optimizing layouts, design development, check drawings, peer review of all deliverables and work activities, creating a positive impact across the department.

  • Assist with outsourcing work by managing drawing exchange with A/Es, responding to documentation RFIs, supporting the design review process, issuing drawings for construction, helping with project closeout, etc.

  • Position also supports internal drawing revisions for some projects and modifying / issuing design basis drawings (e.g., elementary, interlock diagrams, network one-lines, etc.)

  • Assist responsible engineer with: a) evaluating and implementing project requirements as an I&C (Instrumentation & Control) resource to single and multi-discipline project teams for both internally executed projects and outsourced projects; b) provide remote and on-site I&C support with installation, configuration, programming, troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and calibration of control and monitoring systems and associated instrumentation; and c) following applicable regulations, codes, and standards.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have the ability to analyze, interpret, and develop technical writings and drawings such as network one-line diagrams, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams and other schematics.

  • Must have basic knowledge, understanding, and application of process/industrial control/monitoring systems and instrumentation.

  • Must be proficient in the use of MicroStation computer aided drafting (CAD) software, coupled with knowledge in ProjectWise, to create/modify elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, network one-line diagrams or other Electrical or I&C related schematics.

  • Experience with AutoCAD creating Electrical Design and/or I&C drawings is a plus.

  • Experience with servers, computers, and computer-based instruments is a plus.

  • Experience with Ethernet, Modbus, OPC, or other communications protocols, including the ability to troubleshoot issues is a plus.

  • Experience with SEL RTAC, AB Rockwell PLCs, Emerson Ovation, ABB Symphony, and/or GE Mark V and VI is a plus.

  • Proficiency using MS Access, Excel, Word, SQL, SharePoint, and Visual Basics is a plus.

Working Conditions, Environment, and Requirements:

Physical demand level is Sedentary.

  • Must be proficient in working with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors.

  • Candidate may be required to workdays and/or nights as required for the assigned task. Availability to work overtime required.

  • Travel is required, 30% more or less. Some day trips and some overnight, up to a week, possibly more.

  • When visiting any electrical generating station, the use of a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, steel toed shoes with distinctive heel and non-slip soles plus any site-specific criteria are required at all times.

  • When visiting an electrical generating station, the candidate may be required to work in an environment that consists of exposure to hot surfaces, dust, grease, hazardous fumes and chemicals, loud noises, small and large operating machinery and equipment, indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold, rain, ice, snow, and all other forms of weather.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Technical Proficiency: Demonstrates the ability to understand and perform technical functions required in relevant area of assignment. Demonstrates a strong ability to use technical and computer tools to perform assignments in most cost effective method possible. Ensures compliance with standards, codes, regulations, practices, and procedures in area of assignment.

Leadership & Guidance: Develops and may assist in the delivery of training to other employees and sections on employee's area of expertise. May assist in leading the work activities within work group, team, department or other corporate entity as necessary to perform all routine engineering technical assignments. Planning & Organization Ability: Prepares cost estimates for non-routine work, i.e. special projects. Uses records to plan future work.

Plans, organizes and conducts meetings. May plan work and suggests work plans of others to complete non-routine work within time constraints. May coordinate work with suppliers and internal or external customers. Reviews trends of material and equipment performance, and initiate necessary corrective action.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Demonstrates the ability to work beyond routine assignments on moderate to complex issues. Seeks to broaden knowledge in areas of the company and industry which will complement acquired technical skills.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Leads and facilitates meetings effectively. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP System. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done. Develops and presents technical reports clearly, concisely and effectively.

Decision Making & Business Awareness: Uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist. Makes decisions that may affect the operations or results of the section and which may impact the business unit.

Demonstrates the ability to handle conflicting interests related to projects or special tasks. Also demonstrates the ability to analyze options and risks. Exhibits awareness of AEP's competitive position and how business decisions impact their organizational units. Refer to attached matrix for required qualifications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Work Experience requirements are listed below:

Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/ Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fields , with a minimum of 4 years of related utility industry work experience ; OR,

High school diploma or GED, with a minimum of 6 years of related utility industry work experience, including experience in work activities and projects requiring technical engineering knowledge.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands:

-Varies by location or territory.

In some locations or territories, technician must be able to:

  • Walk right ways of various terrain in adverse conditions to patrol distribution power lines to determine damage.

  • Carry and handle telescopic measuring sticks and switching sticks that weigh 11 pounds.

  • May be required to use a brush axe (approx. 6 pounds) or machete (approx. 2 pounds) to clear brush for walking and staking in survey work.

INITIAL POSITION / BASE FUNDING: ($34.12/hour - $50.12/hour; OR, $70,961/year - $104,268/year). In addition to base funding, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, etc.
