Job Summary

Intermediate level of responsibility to facilitate and maintain programs/ systems/ equipment critical to the AEP generating fleet according to established guidelines and specific work tasks. Qualified Applicate will have the ability to configure, manage, and troubleshoot Cisco switches and Firewalls and TCP/IP networking. Has knowledge of program/ system/ equipment requirements and completes assigned work with proficiency. Supports, in collaboration with local and/or remote resources, the forecasting, planning, installation, and commissioning of enhancements to the programs/systems/equipment to meet AEP requirements. Helps site personnel troubleshoot issues.

BUSINESS UNIT: Generation

DEPARTMENT: Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering

LOCATION: hybrid work designation

  • Primary: Columbus, OH - AEP Headquarters

  • Secondary: any AEP location in Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) or Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) service territory (LA, AR, TX)

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled at either title. Minimum requirements of this posting are written at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade:

Technical Specialist Sr. (grade 8)

Technical Specialist (mid-level) (grade 7) = bachelor's degree + six (6) years; OR, associate's degree + eight (8) years

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Intermediate level of responsibility to configure, administer, implement, and maintain specialized programs/ systems/ equipment to support the Generation Organization.

  • Supports the development and maintenance of the required processes and programs.

  • In collaboration with local and/or remote resources, supports the administration and implementation of these processes and programs for specific sites.

Supports the care and maintenance of the specialized programs/ systems/ equipment within the plant.

  • Troubleshoots system/equipment hardware and software.

  • Performs and tests system/equipment upgrades.

  • Reviews plans for changes and/or modifications.

  • Performs other project-related support activities as assigned.

Adheres to strict documentation standards for the specialized programs/systems/equipment to document plans, processes, and procedures.

  • Maintains program/system/equipment records and documents plans and procedures.

  • Electronically archives records for historical purposes/evidence.

  • Provides historical information.

Communicates and collaborates with local personnel to maintain the specialized programs/systems/equipment in alignment with Generation’s requirements.

  • Works with Plant Staff, Plant Management, and others to support a successful local program for the specialized program/system/equipment at specific sites.

  • Collaborates with others to help maintain consistency and continuous improvement within the Generation Organization.

Coordinates, as needed, required and appropriate specialized training of employees with a thorough understanding of any training elements that are necessary.

Participates in implementing projects associated with any new program requirements or system/equipment upgrades or repairs.

Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine work.

Assures safety of all activities.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Must have a desire to work in the Generation Cyber Security and NERC CIP fields.

  • Must have advanced level knowledge, understanding, and application of SCADA and OT networks.

  • Must have the ability to analyze, interpret, and develop technical writings and drawings such as network one-line diagrams, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams and other schematics.

  • Experience with servers, computers, thin clients, and computer-based instruments is a plus.

  • Experience with Ethernet, Modbus, OPC, or other communications protocols, including the ability to troubleshoot issues, is a plus.

  • Experience with Fortinet firewalls and Cisco switches is a plus.

  • Experience with solar, battery, and/or wind farm network equipment is a plus.

  • Proficiency using MS Access, Excel, Word, SQL, SharePoint, and Visual Basics is a plus.

Working Conditions, Environment, and Requirements:

  • Candidate may be required to work days and/or nights as required for the assigned task. Availability to work overtime required.

  • Travel is required, 30% (more or less). Some day trips and some overnight, up to a week, possibly more.

  • When visiting any electrical generating station, the use of a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, steel toed shoes with distinctive heel and non-slip soles plus any site-specific criteria are required at all times.

  • When visiting an electrical generating station, the candidate may be required to work in an environment that consists of exposure to hot surfaces, dust, grease, hazardous fumes and chemicals, loud noises, small and large operating machinery and equipment, indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold, rain, ice, snow, and all other forms of weather.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education : Bachelor’s degree in applicable technical field or Associate’s degree with 2 years of relevant work experience.

Work Experience: In addition to any experience required above, 6 years of direct experience and intermediate level knowledge of the specialized programs/ systems/ equipment is typically required for this particular role.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical demand level varies depending on specific job duties/requirements.

FOCUSED POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($83,500 - $113,000). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual bonus, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, educational assistance, etc.
